La FIDH a été l’une des premières organisations internationales de défense des droits de l’homme à avoir un mandat généraliste, c’est-à-dire couvrant l’ensemble des droits de l’Homme reconnus par la Déclaration Universelle des Droits de l’Homme de 1948. Or les droits économiques, sociaux et culturels, pourtant égaux, interdépendants et indivisibles des droits civils et politiques, ont toujours reçu une attention moindre. Il est apparu évident que toute action portant sur les droits économiques, sociaux et culturels était indissociable d’une réflexion sur la mondialisation économique et financière.
