Burma : 51 political prisoners freed

On 19 November 2012, the Burmese government released 51 political prisoners in an amnesty. Among those released are prominent human rights defenders and political activists, including Saw Kyaw Kyaw Min, Myint Aye, and Yan Shwe, whose situations were raised by FIDH in its recommendations to UN Member States ahead of the annual General Assembly resolution. A day before, the Burmese president’s office announced it would "initiate a process between the Ministry of Home Affairs and interested parties to devise a transparent mechanism to review remaining prisoner cases of concern by the end of December 2012. There are still an estimated 216 political prisoners behind bars.
