The human rights situation in Bangladesh continued to deteriorate through the month of September, as documented in Odhikar’s Monthly Human Rights Monitoring Report covering events from 1 to 31 October 2018.

Fundamental freedoms continued to come under fire throughout the month of October, including continued attacks on the media, peaceful protesters and civil society organizations. New cases of extra-judicial killings and enforced disappearances were reported in October, along with reports of mass arrests and charges against members of the political opposition. The government announced it would begin to monitor social media, websites and blogs in the lead-up to the general elections, due to be held before the end of the year.
