Kenya: Parliament withdraws controversial Public Benefit Organisations (PBO) amendments

On 5 December 2013, Kenyan Members of Parliament announced the withdrawal of contentious amendments to the Statute Law specifically targeting Public Benefit Organisations NGOs now known as PBOs). These amendments, including a drastic change in the way civil society organisations could obtain and manage funding, would have gravely impinged on their right to carry out their work freely without the weight of State intervention.

The advocacy work carried out by FIDH and its member organisation, the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), both before the UN and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) increased regional and international mobilisation, putting pressure on Kenyan authorities.
