OUR MOVEMENT BEHIND BARS

9 December 2012 marked the 14th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Defenders. On this occasion, FIDH pays tribute to the members of its leagues incarcerated.

In various parts of the world human rights defenders brave legal
harassment, arbitrary detention, ill treatment, torture and sometimes
death, in seeking to secure freedom and dignity for all. In challenging
serious abuses of State power, many such defenders find themselves
behind bars;

FIDH members in Bahrain, Belarus, Iran, Turkey and Uzbekistan have befallen this very fate.

Listen to Arnold Tsunga, FIDH Vice President, on the situation of human rights defenders in Zimbabwe ahead of the 2013 elections. Interview by South African Radio, SABC, available on www.fidh.org

Report - Zimbabwe: Ongoing risks for human rights defenders
in the context of political deadlock and pre-electoral period
While Zimbabwe prepares a referendum for a new Constitution and with elections approaching, our organisations fear that human rights defenders will once again fall victim to a rise in violence and a crackdown on civil society, due, in particular, to the collusion between security forces and the Zanu-PF. This report analyses multiple forms of harassment facing human rights defenders as they try to carry out their work.
