Since the beginning of the crisis in Nicaragua, FIDH has informed and mobilised European actors about the crackdown on the Nicaraguan civil society and in particular individuals and organisations standing for the defence of human rights, like its league CENIDH (Nicaraguan Centre for Human Rights).

Ahead of the adoption by the European Parliament on 14 March 2019 of a resolution on the situation in Nicaragua, FIDH shared information and recommendations which are reflected in the final text. FIDH had highlighted that despite the partial release of 100 political prisoners (commutation to house arrest), the number of political prisoners continued to be very high in the country with more than 600.

FIDH also recalled three key pre-conditions for a meaningful national dialogue, a topic which was discussed between Nicaraguan human rights defenders and MEPs during their visit of the country in the beginning of 2019. The resolution recalls these three pre-conditions: thee release of all prisoners, the end of repression, and the restitution of legal personality to NGOs.
