	Latest News         Libya: Back from mission In January, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) went to Libya on an information gathering mission and to establish contact with the new, rapidly growing civil society in the country. The mission went to Tripoli, Misrata and Benghazi, holding lengthy discussions with the representatives of the interim government, members of the National Transition Council (NTC), lawyers, journalists and representatives of human rights organisations.   Read on   Did you know ? 	Colombia/Panama: FIDH and CCAJAR in Panama request extradition of former DAS Director Representatives of FIDH and CCAJAR have presented Panamanian authorities with evidence that María del Pilar Hurtado,former DAS Director, is neither under threat nor subject to political persecution in Colombia.  They have accordingly requested authorities to rescind her political exile status, granted in November 2010, to allow her extradition in respect of alleged criminal activities carried out in office. 	Belarus: Sentencing of Ales Bialiatski confirmed: 4.5 years imprisonment for defending human rights “For the past year, the situation in Belarus has gone from bad to worse. This sentence sends the unequivocal signal that the authorities do not intend to make any progress in complying with their human rights obligations”, says Souhayr Belhassen, FIDH President. Read on

	Iran: 2012 begins with one execution every four hours and more death sentences  In the first week of 2012, the Iranian authorities achieved a record high, hanging one person every four hours. Thirty-nine people were executed in cities countrywide, including three public executions in the western city of Kermanshah.  Read on

	Globalisation and migration: Importing workers, exporting strawberries In the province of Huelva, in Andalusia, intensive farming of strawberries, destined to supply European markets early in the season, calls for a large temporary work force for a period of several months. Some 50,000 seasonal workers, mainly foreign migrant workers, are employed on farms each year. Economic conditions push producers to reduce their costs and to use workers as an adjustment variable.
