Sub-Saharan Africa stands out because of its great diversity, not least in the area of human rights. While in some countries FIDH and its member organisations strive for the free exercise of public freedoms, in others they support and promote whatever are the concerns of civil society, from demanding protection for civilian populations during armed conflicts, to campaigning against impunity, organising democratic elections, protecting
women’s rights or upholding the right to education for all…Economic exploitation in the form of corruption or the relentless appetite of multinationals are important reasons for our organisations to continue making States and companies aware of their responsibilities in matters of
economic and social rights. Our actions correspond to the positive dynamic taking hold on the continent, where more and more States have revoked the
death penalty as they seek to build a common future in which human rights are respected, as symbolised by the establishment of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
