Authorities responsible for street violence

Communiqué

Once more, ordinary citizens have been the worst sufferers of wanton violence in the streets that erupted in several major cities on Tuesday, and again, on Wednesday.

HRCP holds the authorities responsible for allowing this descent into a state of chaos. That the people all over the country have been deeply shocked at the cartoons issue is understandable but what is not understandable is the administration’s abdication of its duty to protect innocent citizens’ lives and property. There can be no justification for permitting mobs armed with sticks and clubs to take to the roads, inflicting terror on people and causing grave damage to property. The fact that this was allowed strongly suggests governments’ collusion, at least partially if not completely, with elements it now describes as miscreants. The statement by the Punjab chief minister, that those responsible for the chaos will not be allowed to get away, means nothing given that it has come after the mob had already rampaged through city streets for hours.

It is now the duty of the government to ensure that the violence and the disruption in the life of people that has come with it be brought to an immediate end. It is important that rash actions that can heighten tension not be taken by security personnel. The situation also points to the dangers in allowing forces of extremism open space to expand and grow even as mainstream parties and women and teachers continue to be subjected to tough restrictions.

HRCP expresses its deep regret over the losses suffered by people. We call for the state of chaos to be brought under control immediately.

Iqbal Haider
Secretary-general
