This accord brings to a close a four year-long process of negotiation, thus putting an end to a 60 year-long armed conflict. The signatory organisations from the Americas welcome this big stride forward in the long quest for peace, which will have a positive impact throughout the region.
“We champion this accord in the hope that it will provide an opportunity for lasting peace and social justice, for peace does not come just because guns are silent but because of the building of equity and justice which has yet to be achieved in Colombia.”
It is essential that these efforts be deployed in keeping with international human rights standards and the principles of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence, with priority given to the victims of the conflict.
We reaffirm the recent appeal by the FIDH’s 184 member organisations in Johannesburg during the 39th FIDH Congress, in which, drawing on their participation in peace negotiations in Africa, Asia and Europe, they call upon the citizens of Colombia to value the meaning of the end of the war and vote for peace in the plebiscite.
