Burundi: EU renews sanctions against human rights violators

On 25 October 2018, EU Member States renewed the set of individual restrictive measures (asset freeze and visa ban) against four individuals in Burundi.

During the year, FIDH and its league Iteka conducted a round of advocacy meetings and several complementary activities including briefings and exchanges of information with EU interlocutors to keep them informed of the reality of the situation on the ground. Given the consolidation of the repressive apparatus and the near total disappearance of the space for free activity by the civil society, FIDH and its member organisation advocated for the maintaining of the sanctions and their extension to other perpetrators of human rights violations and/or acts undermining democracy and a political solution to the crisis in Burundi.
