Basic freedoms and rights, including the right to life, education, property and movement, are regularly violated in the six territories in Eastern Europe where there is continued armed conflict or the territories are uncontrolled by the de jure state they are part of under international law: Crimea, Eastern Ukraine, Transnistria, Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Nagorno-Karabakh.
FIDH member organisations on the ground continue defending and promoting human rights in these territories by providing legal assistance, advocating for a peaceful solution of a conflict, advancing the rule of law, human rights education and reconciliation programs and monitoring the situation first-hand. The side event shall gather speakers who will discuss the situation in disputed entities as of today, international responses, or lack thereof, opportunities for improvement and ongoing challenges.

The Human Dimension Implementation Meeting (HDIM) of OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) participating States is Europe’s largest annual human rights and democracy conference. It is organized every year by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) as a platform for the 57 OSCE participating States, the OSCE Partners for Co-operation, OSCE structures, civil society, international organizations and other relevant actors to take stock of the implementation of OSCE human dimension commitments, discuss associated challenges, share good practices and make recommendations for further improvement. 2018 HDIM will take place in Warsaw from 10 to 21 September 2018.
