Today FIDH launches a call for the next Community-Based Human Rights Impact Assessment (COBHRIA) to be carried out by a member organization in close cooperation with the globalisation and human rights desk of FIDH, in order to document the impacts of business on human rights and the environment.

This is an unique opportunity for organizations to

  • engage in a capacity building process to improve their organizations’ and affected communities’ capacity to identify human rights violations, dialogue with governmental and corporate actors, and ensure accountability for human rights and environmental violations ;
  • document through a specific case, the impacts of companies on human rights and the environment through a community-based methodology ;
  • establish the responsibility of governmental and corporate actors ;
  • bring attention to the specific case and initiate actions on the basis of the HRIA .

FIDH will fund and support the Human Rights Impact Assessment which can be carried out by a member organization alone or in collaboration with other partners.

For all the details regarding the information and documents to be submitted with each application see the full Call for proposals 2018.

Business activities such as large-scale private investment and development projects can generate adverse consequences for local communities human rights and environment. However, increasing power of economic actors hinders access to justice and reparation, calling for the use of innovative tools and methodologies to ensure corporate accountability.

FIDH advocates for Community-Based Human Rights Impact Assessments (COBHRIAs), a methodology which gives ownership to affected communities to assess and document the potential human rights impacts that investment projects may generate through a step-by-step methodology which guides communities and NGOs to measure the actual or potential human rights impact of an investment project, and enables the drafting of a final report and recommendations which can serve as a basis for engagement with public and private actors involved in the investment project.
