A situation report provides a human rights overview of a specific country, based on information available to FIDH and its member organisations and partners. It is a central tool to inform decision-makers about the situation of a country. This note was submitted to the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) during its 71st and 72nd ordinary sessions held in April and July 2022, as part of the advocacy work carried out by our organisations on the situation in Mali. Despite the alarming deterioration of the human rights situation in the country, none of these sessions resulted in a public statement by the Commission.
Our organisations call on the ACHPR to:
– publicly express itself on the situation of public freedoms, the serious human rights violations in Mali and on the ensuing impunity;
– take an urgent resolution concerning the increasing restrictions and human rights violations in the country.

About the ACHPR
The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) is an organ of the African Union (AU) whose mandate is the protection and promotion of human rights on the continent. It is composed of working groups and country and thematic special rapporteurs, and meets on average twice a year in ordinary sessions. Extraordinary sessions may also be organised during the year. The regular sessions of the ACHPR are preceded by the NGO Forum, which brings together several NGOs to develop common strategies and resolutions on human rights. Since Covid19, the ACHPR sessions have been organised virtually, but a resumption of face-to-face sessions is planned, notably in Banjul, Gambia, the institution’s headquarters.
NGOs having observer status at the ACHPR can intervene orally and submit draft resolutions, previously adopted at the NGO Forum, on a specific situation during the current sessions, for adoption by the Commission.
