Communiqué

Attention : The King of Saudi Arabia, Minsters of Justice and the Interior and those concerned at the flogging and imprisonment of Raif Badawi.

Attached for your attention and action is the letter from Lawyers Rights Watch Canada, the Law Society of England and Wales, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) - within the framework of their joint programme the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders calling on the Government of Saudi Arabia and the international community to take effective action to ensure that Raif Badawi is :

o Immediately and unconditionally released from prison ;

o Protected from the flogging to which he has been sentenced ;

o Reunified with his family.

The prosecution, conviction and sentencing of Raif Badawi for peacefully exercising internationally protected rights violate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention against Torture and other instruments guaranteeing rights to expression, fair trial and freedom from torture.

We look forward to your reply and to your action(s) to ensure Mr. Badawi’s release and protection.

Thank you
