On 15 December 2012, Egyptians will be invited to vote in a nationwide referendum on the draft Constitution adopted by the Constituent Assembly and approved by the Egyptian President, Mohamed Morsy. The draft constitution has been widely rejected by human rights organizations as well as political opponents who called for the referendum to be postponed, as there was no time for consultation or public dialogue.
FIDH publishes today a position paper which stresses the highly problematic drafting process of the constitution in the Constituent Assembly and the main issues in the draft constitution on women’s, civil, political, economic and social rights, as well as the role of the judiciary.
