Economic and Social Rights in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean

In 2000, close to 2.7 billion people around the world did not
have access to water; one child in seven of school-age did not
go to school, and approximately 840 million individuals
suffered from malnutrition. An estimated 1.3 billion
individuals have a daily income of under one dollar. Such
marginalization underlines how much the enjoyment of
economic and social rights challenges the international
community. With globalization - which is synonymous for many
to impoverishment, cultural marginalization, increased
economic and social exclusion and precarious living -, the
guarantee of such rights represents indeed one of the most
complex challenges of the new millennium.
