Freedom of human rights defenders in Uzbekistan

Human rights defender, Alisher Karamatov, Director of the Uzbekistan Society of Human Rights, convicted in 2006 to nine (9) years in prison following unfair and inequitable proceedings, was finally freed on 12 April 2012.

Khabibulla Okpulativ, a member of the Uzbekistan Society of Human Rights was also freed on 4 July after over six (6) years of incarceration. He had been convicted of “aggravated extortion”.

The Observatory for the protection of human rights defenders has been mobilised for several years on the cases of imprisoned defenders in Uzbekistan.
