Ukrainian Parliament asks ICC for investigation of international crimes on its territory

On 4 February, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted a resolution recognizing ICC jurisdiction over international crimes committed in Ukraine since 20 February 2014.

Although Ukraine already recognised ICC jurisdiction over international crimes committed during the Maidan events between November 2013 and February 2014 - a preliminary examination by the ICC is underway - this new development marks an important step for accountability in the ongoing conflict.

FIDH and its partner organization in Ukraine, the Center for Civil Liberties (CCL), led an advocacy mission in Kiev from 19 to 23 January 2015 calling upon the authorities for this extension of its jurisdiction to international crimes committed since February 2014 and for the ratification of the ICC Statute.

The Ukrainian executive must now make the formal declaration in order for the ICC to have jurisdiction.
