In view of the upcoming 4th Universal Periodic Review, on 4 February 2009, when member states will review the Russian Federation’s human rights record, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) issues a note on the situation in the country. The note underlines the setbacks of democratic principles and the rule of law during the last few months of the year. Topics covered include the situation of human rights defenders, attacks on freedom of expression, human rights in the context of the fight against terrorism, and the situation of migrants. It concludes with a list of recommendations addressed to the Russian authorities.
