FIDH President Souhayr Belhassen to meet Kyrgyz Authorities

FIDH President Souhayr Belhassen accompanied by FIDH Vice-President Aliaksandr Bialiatski (Belarus) will visit Kyrgyzstan from 1st to 4th December 2010 to present a report on a fact-finding mission: "Kyrgyzstan: a weak state, political instability: civil society caught up in the turmoil", which documents the human rights situation in the country following the events of April and June 2010.

The delegation will meet the interim President Roza Otunbayeva, representatives of the interim government and of the international community, in order to evaluate the measures undertaken to put an end to the persistence of human rights violations and to confront their impunity. The mission will also raise the question of the situation of human rights defenders, particularly the case of Azimjan Askarov, an ethnic Uzbek human rights defender, who was sentenced to life imprisonment on 15th September, following an unfair trial.

Souhayr Belhassen will also meet members of the Kyrgyz civil society and victims of human rights abuses as well as the media.

This FIDH mission is organised with the support of its member organisations in Kyrgystan, "Citizens against Corruption", "Kylym Shamy" and Legal Clinic "Adilet".
