On March 17, the European Committee of Social Rights deemed admissible a landmark collective complaint lodged against Ireland in July 2014 by FIDH and FLAC, its associated member in Ireland in close cooperation with a number of Irish organisations and groups.

The complaint, resulting from 5 years of evidence gathering, outlines dire and widespread sub-standard housing issues across 20 Local Authority housing estates, thus alleging that Irish law, policy and practices on Local Authority housing do not comply with European standards and violate key articles of the Revised European Social Charter.

FIDH thus paves the way for others to use this mechanism to enforce human rights on a European level.
