The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights examines Greece

The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) is currently examining Greece. Ahead of this review, FIDH submitted a parallel report to the UN CESCR presenting our main findings and recommendations regarding violations of economic, social and cultural rights in Greece.

FIDH has been intensly working on human rights, including ESCR, in Greece for the past two years.

In December 2014, we released a report entitled : Downgrading rights: the cost of austerity in Greece. Our assessment, based on the findings gathered during a mission of investigation carried out earlier that year, came to one stark conclusion: austerity measures adopted in response to the economic crisis have had a devastating impact on human rights, including the rights to work and health, and curtailed fundamental freedoms in the country. The responsibility of both Greece and others actors (namely the EU and IMF and other States) for rights violations deriving from austerity measures has also been central to our analysis.
