Bangkok, Paris-23 July 2022. On 23 July 2022, veteran pro-democracy activist Jimmy and former National League for Democracy (NLD) member of Parliament Phyo Zayar Thaw, along with two other men, Hla Myo Aung and Aung Thura Zaw, were hanged in Yangon’s Insein Prison. The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and ALTSEAN-Burma deplore the junta’s execution of four men, which marks the resumption of the use of the death penalty in Myanmar since the last executions carried out under a previous military regime in 1988.

“The shocking executions mark another sad day for Myanmar, showing that the junta’s utter disregard for the right to life knows no bounds. We condemn these executions, along with the extrajudicial killing of more than 2,000 civilians since February 2021.”

Adilur Rahman Khan, International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) Secretary General

Jimmy and Phyo Zeya Thaw were sentenced to death by a military court in January 2022 after being convicted of politically-motivated charges involving explosives, bombings, and financing terrorism under the Anti-Terrorism Law. Hla Myo Aung and Aung Thura Zaw were sentenced to death after being found guilty of the murder of a woman believed to act as an informer for the military in Yangon’s Hlaing Tharyar Township.

“By implementing the death penalty the junta gave the finger to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), whose chair had urged the military not to execute the four men. It’s time for ASEAN to use more stick and less carrot to end the junta’s murderous rule.”

Debbie Stothard, ALTSEAN-Burma Coordinator

FIDH, a founding member of the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty (WCADP), reiterates its strong opposition to the death penalty for all crimes and in all circumstances.
