Today, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) submitted a report to the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Committee (CCPR) ahead of the CCPR’s review of the Maldives’ second periodic report under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

The report, jointly prepared with Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN), details human rights violations that are inconsistent with the Maldives’ legal obligations under various provisions of the ICCPR with regard to: non-discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity (Articles 2 and 26); the right to an effective remedy (Article 2); the prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (Article 7); the treatment of persons deprived of their liberty (Article 10); freedom of religion or belief (Articles 2, 18, and 26); and freedom of association (Article 22).

The CCPR’s review of the Maldives’ second periodic report will take place on 9-10 July 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland.
