Today, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) made a submission to the United Nations (UN) Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) for its pre-session of the review of Laos’ initial report under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).

The submission, prepared jointly with the Lao Movement for Human Rights (LMHR), raises concerns over the following issues: 1) Limited or non-existent space for civil society; 2) insufficient minimum wage; 3) unfavorable working conditions; and 4) negative impacts of infrastructure and investment projects.

The CESCR’s pre-session will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 16 to 20 October 2023. It will result in the adoption of the List of Issues (LoI), a document that contains key concerns and questions that the CESCR will transmit to the Lao government prior to the actual review session, the date of which has not yet been set.
