(Strasbourg, 8 June 2016) In a resolution adopted today, the European Parliament (EP) raised a number of human rights issues pertaining to the PCA, following FIDH’s recommendations. The EP namely called upon the Philippines to ensure effective implementation of all core international conventions relating to human and labour rights, continue fostering progress in the promotion of human rights - including the publication of the National Action Plan for Human Rights - and implement the UN guiding principles (UNGPs) on business and human rights.
FIDH is particularly active on the issue of trade, business and human rights, providing regular input and briefings to key actors across the EU institutions. The resolution also highlighted the repression of activists peacefully campaigning to protect ancestral lands from the impact of mining and deforestation. It also shone a light on the inhuman working conditions of many Filipino seamen, calling on Member States to bar vessels from European ports when working conditions contravene labour rights and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
