MOTION ON CHINA

Noting the release and exile to the U.S. on March 4, 2004, of Wang Youcai, former June 4th student leader and one of the organizers of the Chinese Democracy Party, the FIDH and its China affiliate, Human Rights in China (HRIC), points out with great concern the opportunistic timing of this release, coming close as it does to the opening of the 60th Commission on Human Rights on March 15, and in the context of serious discussion of a possible China resolution to be tabled by the U.S. The FIDH and HRIC strongly believe that exile is not progress in respect for the human rights of China’s people. We urge that meaningful progress should be measured by true systemic reforms and commitment to democratic reforms, the development of an independent fair legal system, and respect for the freedom of expression, association, and the right to information. The FIDH and HRIC urge the unconditional release of all those imprisoned for peaceful exercise of these rights, those still in prison for ‘counterrevolutionary’ crimes which have been abolished, and the release of all other human rights defenders.
