Geneva, Paris, Bangkok – The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (Forum Asia) welcome today’s decision of the UN Human Rights Council to call for a Special Session on Myanmar/Burma, in light of the current repression against peaceful protesters in the country. The session will be held in Geneva on Tuesday 2nd October 20071.

”The decision to convene such a session represents an unprecedented chance to contribute to the prevention of a further deterioration of the situation.” said Anselmo Lee, Executive Director of Forum Asia.

FIDH and Forum Asia expect the Special Session to unanimously condemn the pattern of grave human rights violations, including the recent killings, torture and disappearance of monks and students in pro-democracy demonstrations, and to urge the authorities to engage in a genuine dialogue with the democratic opposition and ethnic minorities.

The session should also take action on the persistent lack of cooperation of the military junta with the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar, Mr. Paulo Sergio Pinheiro.

“The Council should also threaten to adopt targeted sanctions against the military regime should the junta refuse to implement such requests”, said Ms. Souhayr Belhassen, President of FIDH.
