On 15 October 2014, political activist and All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABFSU) member Phyu Hnin Htwe was released from Monywa Prison, Sagaing Division. Phyu Hnin Htwe had been detained since 13 September 2014 on fabricated charges of kidnapping two Chinese workers near the Letpadaung copper mine in Salingyi Township, Sagaing Division. The Chinese company Wanbao, one of the mine’s operators dropped all charges against her after a 13 October hearing at the Yinmabin District Court, Sagaing Division.

Since 2010, Phyu Hnin Htwe has participated in demonstrations focusing on issues such as land rights. From August to December 2012, she became involved in community protests against the Letpadaung copper mine.
