The human rights situation in Bangladesh continued to deteriorate through the month of September, as documented in Odhikar’s Monthly Human Rights Monitoring Report covering events from 1 to 30 September 2018.

Fundamental freedoms continued to come under fire throughout the month of September, including continued attacks on the media, peaceful protesters and civil society organizations. New cases of extra-judicial killings and enforced disappearances were reported in September, along with reports of mass arrests and charges against members of the political opposition. The Digital Security Act was passed in Parliament, without taking into consideration the concerns of the media and civil society regarding provisions in the Act that are not compliant with international legal obligations regarding freedom of expression.
