Open letter in the perspective of the next session of the political dialogue EU-Mexico

21/03/2003
Press release

To : EU and Mexico Foreign Affairs Ministers
EU High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana
EU Commissioners, Chris Patten and Pascal Lamy

On behalf of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and its member organisations in Mexico, the Mexican Commission for the Defence and Promotion of Human Rights (CMDPDH) and the Mexican League for the Defence of Human Rights (LIMEDDH), we address you this letter in view of the next session of political dialogue between the EU and Mexico, to be held on 27 March 2003.
We hope that it will be the opportunity to take into account the concrete propositions that have been made by EU-Mexican civil society during the first EU-Mexico civil society forum, which took place in Brussels on 26 November 2002.
We would like to take advantage of this political dialogue to draw your attention to a series of proposals elaborated by the FIDH, in consultation with many other civil society organisations, regarding the implementation of the “human rights clause”.

More particularly, we would like you to consider the importance and possibility of setting up a human rights working group, in accordance with article 49 of the agreement, and the necessity of initiating a real consultation with civil society on the theme of human rights.

A more detailed account of the proposals can be found in the attached document, which was presented by the FIDH during the Fourth EU Human Rights Forum held in Copenhagen in December 2002. We invite you to read it and hope that the propositions it withholds will be taken into consideration during the coming session of the political dialogue.

Sincerely Yours,

Sidiki Kaba

President
