FIDH is deeply saddened by the death, on 5 January 2017, of Aboubacry Mbodj, a longtime friend and a fervent Senegalese human rights defender. Aboubacry Mbodj was the Secretary-General of the African Assembly for the Defense of Human Rights (RADDHO – Rencontre africaine pour la défense des droits de l’Homme), a member organisation of FIDH. Senegal, and more broadly the African continent, lost a prominent human rights defender.

Aboubacry Mbodj dedicated his life to defending respect for human rights in all circumstances, denouncing the worst violations committed against deprived African populations, and demanding justice against arbitrariness and impunity in Senegal, his country, and everywhere else in Africa and in the world.

"The community of human rights defenders mourns a fervent activist who constantly stood up and acted to make respect for human rights a reality. Aboubacry Mbodj always strongly defended his convictions. To honor his memory, we will continue our common struggle with greater abnegation, ".

Dimitris Christopoulos, FIDH President

Aboubacry Mbodj spared no effort in his work to promote and protect human rights. His determination to act, his courage to denounce the violations and his consistency in accompanying the victims knew no borders.

« "Aboubacry Mbodj fought all the battles. For more than 30 years, he has participated extensively in the development of civil society in Senegal for which he sacrificed everything. Today we pay tribute to the figure he incarnated and to the battles he fought. His universal struggle for human rights will continue, ".

Mabassa Fall, FIDH Representative to the African Union

Through Aboubacry Mbodj, RADDHO tirelessly campaigned for respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Senegal, but also to put an end to enforced disappearances and extra-judicial killings in the Gambia, slavery in Mauritania, looting and enforced displacement in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or the occupation in Palestine. Under his leadership, RADDHO reinforced its action at the regional level and continued its recognized work of documentation and denunciation.

"The presence of Aboubacry did not go unnoticed as he led his fight with ardor. Before the ECOWAS, the African Union or the United Nations, he did not hesitate to remind political leaders of their responsibilities in the strongest terms. The best testimony of his struggle is for us to continue to fight to make democratic principles and justice prevail all over the world, "

Drissa Traoré, FIDH Vice-President

FIDH and its 184 member organisations regret the death of Aboubacry Mbodj and extend their sincerest condolences to his family, his wife and his children, and to everyone who worked with him in this universal struggle for justice and peace. FIDH has a special thought to his friends and colleagues at the RADDHO, the National Organisation for Human Rights (ONDH) and the Senegalese League for Human Rights (LSDH) and wishes to express its profound solidarity with them.
