Mr Sow was released on June 29, 2015 by order of the Appeal Court of Aleg. He was arrested on November 11, 2014 for taking part in a caravan campaign against the ongoing land grabbing suffered by local farmers who are then “enslaved” to work the land they previously owned. On the January 15, 2015, Mr Sow was sentenced to 2 years for “belonging to an unlawful organization” and “unlawful assembly”.
FIDH, through its Observatory, had actively advocated for his release and issued an urgent appeal to that effect. Mr Sow further suffers from very poor health and untreated kidney stones aggravated by deplorable conditions of detention. His arrest, condemnation and detention are a clear attempt to thwart his human rights work. He is now under medical care in a Nouakchott hospital.
