In response to the passage of the "Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act" by the United States (US) House of Representatives, FIDH and over 75 human rights organisations, legal experts, and civil society groups call on members of the US Congress and the incoming administration to oppose attacks on the International Criminal Court (ICC). In an open letter to US leaders, they urge the immediate rejection of harmful sanctions and legislation designed to undermine the ICC, a crucial institution for holding perpetrators of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide accountable.
The signatory organisations warn that such measures risk weakening international justice, emboldening regimes seeking to evade accountability, and jeopardising victims’ critical access to justice. They call on the US to reaffirm its commitment to the rule of law, uphold its human rights obligations, and strengthen global efforts to combat impunity for atrocity crimes.
