On 20 February 2024, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and its member organisation League for the Defence of Human Rights in Iran (LDDHI) published the third of their Iran Notes, a series of short thematic briefing notes that analyse the key aspects and root causes of Iran’s ongoing human rights crisis.

The note analyses the repressive and hostile environment for civil society organisations, human rights NGOs, and human rights defenders in Iran.

The note examines in particular the current legislative and regulatory framework and the draft Social Organisations Law, the criminalisation of activists and human rights defenders and the imprisonment of lawyers and journalists.

The first Iran Note, published in September 2023, analysed Iran’s judiciary as a tool of repression and fear. The second Iran Note, published in November 2023, analyzed the use of the death penalty.
