CREATION OF A CAUCUS ON DIGNITY AND HUMAN RIGHTS WITHIN THE WORLD SOCIAL FORUM

Human dignity is an absolute and non-negotiable value. It is inherent to all human beings, and it is the source of all rights.

In particular, this translates into the primacy of international human rights law (which is designed to protect this very dignity) over and above any other international agreement. The supreme norms are the common values of humankind: all rights for all human beings.
The challenge is therefore to build a true globalization of human rights, the norms of which then would allow all actors on the international scene to take responsibility for their activities.

United in this belief, the undersigned organisations have decided to form a "Caucus on Dignity and Human Rights" within the World Social Forum. They are committed to prolonging the existing human rights movement within the social movement. It is clear that poverty is a depravation of human dignity, and a gross violation of civil, political, economic and social rights.

The caucus has decided on a program for Porto Alegre in January 2002, which includes:

a conference on dignity and the primacy of human rights
 three seminars on
 international justice
 non-state actors and human rights
 economic, social and cultural rights
several more technical workshops around each of the seminars.
