In a letter addressed to the UN Security Council today, the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH), together with Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (GCR2P), urge the Council to immediately take action to address the deteriorating human rights crisis in Burundi.

At least 400 people have been killed in Burundi thus far and the killings on 11 December demonstrate that country may be sliding into a civil war. Therefore, we call on the Security Council to immediately mandate the deployment of a UN mission to Burundi with an international police force to protect civilians. The UN mission should work in parallel with any AU force, should it be deployed. Delay is no longer an option. The international community must act now to prevent a further deterioration of the human rights situation in Burundi.
