Press release

In an open letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Ambassador John Bolton published today, FIDH President Sidiki Kaba and 2003 Nobel Peace Prize Shirin Ebadi have called the United States of America to withdraw its opposition to the proposed resolution on the UN Human Rights Council.

President Kaba and Ms Ebadi indeed recognized that while the text is not ideal, « for those of us who are engaged in the daily defense of victims of the gravest human rights violations, it offers notable potential improvements in a number of fields ».

They further highlight that following adoption of the resolution, « we will have the opportunity to address the issue of pledges requested from States » and require from candidates to the Council the ratification and implementation of human rights treaties, the full cooperation with UN Special procedures, etc.

The letter also suggests that pledges could also refer to the behaviour of candidates once elected on the Council, with States committing to limiting their « political » room of manoeuvre in order to take action on human rights crises in response to calls from UN experts and evaluate countries human rights record within the peer review in conformity whith the full body of treaty bodies’ recommendations.
