The European Commission must act against the deterioration of civic space and democratic standards in Italy

  • The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and over 80 civil society organisations have signed a letter urging European Commissioner Michael McGrath to take urgent action against the alarming deterioration of civic space, democratic standards, and the rule of law in Italy.
  • The letter denounces the recently adopted Security Decree, which imposes severe restrictions on peaceful protest, freedom of expression, and digital rights, and calls on the European Commission to use all available tools to uphold European Union (EU) law and values.
  • FIDH and its member organisation in Italy, the Unione Forense per la Tutela di Diritti Umani (UFTDU) are currently analysing the decree to identify potential inconsistencies with both Italian and EU law which could trigger action at the domestic and EU level.
