JOINT NGO LETTER: Delete all reference to readmission as a conditionality in draft EU GSP reform

Paris, 27 February 2023. In a letter published today, the signatory organisations urge the members of the Council of the EU to abandon the current proposal to condition trade preferences to migration and readmission cooperation in the framework of the EU’s ongoing Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) reform. They argue that it would not only be inconsistent with the general framework of GSP but counter-productive and even questionable in relation to World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules as this readmission conditionality is not motivated by human rights or sustainable development goals, which further makes it inconsistent with the EU’s own GSP objectives and core values.
