The report assess the human rights situation in Bangladesh from 1 June 2018 to 31 March 2023.
In May 2018, during Bangladesh’s third UPR cycle, a total of 251 recommendations were made by UN member states, of which the Bangladeshi government accepted 178 and noted 73. Many of these recommendations were a continuation of the first and second UPR cycles.
However, during Bangladesh’s third UPR cycle, the human rights situation in the country has further deteriorated. The government made no progress in implementing recommendations related to: the right to life; freedom of expression, association, and assembly; the prevention of torture and ill-treatment; enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings; gender equality; and cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms.
In a separate joint submission, FIDH and 6 other organisations addressed Bangladesh’s compliance with its international human rights obligations with respect to the death penalty, the prohibition of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, conditions of detention, and administration of justice and fair trials.
