This pioneering instrument provides a road map for states to eliminate sexual violence and its consequences, in accordance with their regional and international obligations. It is in line with some of the most progressive standards in the fight against sexual violence, and contains recommendations on violence prevention, victim protection and support, investigation and prosecution of perpetrators and reparations for victims.
FIDH and LHR (South Africa) which participated actively in the process of developing these guidelines, welcome the adoption of this important instrument and call on African Union (AU) Member States to take the necessary steps to implement its provisions.
