The FIDH (International Federation for Human Rights) is an international human rights NGO. Since 1922, we have been committed to the defence of all civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We are a federation of 192 national human rights organisations active in 117 countries. We believe that the transformation of societies is first and foremost the responsibility of local actors. Our activities aim to strengthen their capacity for action and their influence.

The FIDH International Secretariat is a human-sized organisation (45 employees in Paris and 14 employees in several offices abroad) and is composed of a committed international team. Our Paris office is located in a lively and central area of Paris (near Bastille and Gare de Lyon).


The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the head of the Human Rights Defenders Protection desk and in close cooperation and consultation with the Program Officer for West and South Asia and FIDH’s international advocacy team.

Context of the position
FIDH’s current work on Afghanistan and the protection of Afghan civil society and human rights defenders are undertaken in coalition with other NGO partners, including through several formal and informal coalitions.

Your main responsibilities
Take the lead in coordinating FIDH’s advocacy work with coalition partners, including through:
• Organizing regular virtual and in-person coordination meetings with NGO partners to coordinate advocacy work ;
• Drafting and/or editing briefing papers, advocacy letters, press releases, submissions to international mechanisms, and other similar advocacy resources ;
• Producing advocacy tools, including stakeholder maps, advocacy contact lists, advocacy talking points and recommendations, and other similar tools and resources ;
• Conducting advocacy missions with European Union and UN stakeholders ;
• Working in collaboration with other FIDH staff and consultants to identify research and documentation needs ;
• Contributing to the elaboration of FIDH’s strategy on Afghanistan and contributing to the formulation of funding applications for activities on Afghanistan ;
• Contributing to the design and implementation of communication activities, in consultation with the press, web, and communication departments ;
• Contributing to monitor, assess, and report on activities carried out.

Profile required
Essential :
• Minimum of 4 years of successful work experience in the field of human rights (preferably for a national, regional and/or international NGO) in an advocacy capacity.
• Minimum of one year of work experience related to Afghanistan.
• In-depth understanding of the human rights, political, social, and economic context in Afghanistan, as well as the international NGO landscape in support to Afghan civil society.
• Excellent English (C1), written and spoken.
• Excellent writing skills and attention to details.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize, and proactively communicate.
• Ability to lead and coordinate initiatives as part of networks and coalitions.

Desirable :
• A university degree in a relevant field, such as political science, international relations, or human rights law.
• Knowledge of French (level B2) and Dari.

You will be working with Ubuntu and Libre Office environment.

Terms and conditions of employment
12-month fixed-term contract. Position based in Paris or Brussels.
Salary conditions if the position is based in Paris : 31.2 K€ gross per year over 13 months. Teleworking possible with a minimum of 4 days face-to-face per month. 25 days paid holiday and 24 days RTT per year. Supplementary health insurance : employer’s contribution of €82 per month. Meal vouchers with a face value of €9, paid for at 60% by the FIDH. 50% of the cost of public transport passes is covered.

Position to be filled : 1 February 2022.

The interviews (to be held remotely due to the current sanitary situation) will be scheduled to be held by 19 January 2022.
