FIDH (International Federation for Human Rights) is an international NGO for the defence of human rights. Since 1922, we have been engaged in the defence of all civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We federate 193 national associations for the defence of human rights active in 117 countries, with which we work on a daily basis. For us, the transformation of societies is first and foremost the responsibility of local actors. Our activities aim to strengthen their capacity for action and their influence.

The International Secretariat of FIDH is a human-sized organization (47 employees in Paris and several offices abroad) and composed of a committed, multicultural international team.

We are looking for:

Policy and Legal Consultant on Corporate accountability and due diligence in Latin America

Assignment commissioned by FIDH

The FIDH’s teams of globalisation and human rights and the Americas, are looking for a consultant to help with the work on Due Diligence and Corporate Accountability in Latin America.

Aims of the assignment:
Provide legal advice in the area of Due Diligence and Corporate Accountability for human rights and environmental violations in Latin America and in particular in Peru, Brazil and Chile and other significant economies of the region.

The assignment shall take the form of:

1. A scoping exercise on the state of play of due diligence and corporate accountability legislations in particular in Peru, Brazil and Chile.
2. Support to the work of the Globalisation and the Americas’ teams (who remains the main reference point for external stakeholders and member organisations) on organisation and the facilitation of a regional discussion and exchange among civil society, experts and academics in order to work towards common principles at regional level
3. Elaboration of a regional policy brief that will reflect the common regional position and highlight the elements to be included in a legislative proposal to enhance corporate accountability for human rights and environmental abuses in the region.

Skills and Experience required:
Essential
Business and human rights expertise: Strong, demonstrable expertise in the field of business and human rights. Higher education in law with specialization in international law or human rights. At least 7 years’ experience in legal research, litigation or advocacy in this area and in legal and policy analysis. A clear understanding, vision and strategic insight on the legal and judicial framework regulating business activities in Latin America.
Research & analytical skills: Strong experience in researching and drafting studies/producing scoping exercises and policy briefings. Able to search and identify relevant information online and offline. Adept at undertaking systematic data collection to a high level of detail and accuracy. Ability to synthesise research and policy for effective communication to a broad range of audiences.
• Communication skills: Excellent writing and speaking skills in English and Spanish (level C1). Ability to read and speak Portuguese is a plus. Capacity of organising and facilitating meetings among different actors such as experts, civil society and academia.
• Values: Strong, demonstrated commitment to economic justice and human rights. Shares the values of the FIDH.
• Organisation and initiative: Able to work efficiently and methodically to support achievement of deliverables. Strong prioritization skills. Self-motivated and comfortable working independently within agreed framework while maintaining communication with a remote, inter-disciplinary and culturally diverse team.

Desirable
• Knowledge of French and ability to read and speak French.
• Knowledge of Portuguese

Timeline:
Starting date: 1 December 2022
End date: 31 March 2024

Working days required: 45 days

Budget: max 20.000 euro all included
