“It is vital that steps are taken now to establish and protect equal rights between men and women as the very foundation of democratic societies,” underlined Souhayr Belhassen, FIDH President. “We address these recommendations to the governments of the region because fighting discrimination and violence against women is above all a question of political will”.
Mr Nabil Al Arabi also received the “Appeal for dignity and equality” initiated by 8 women from the region and launched on International Women’s Day 2012. More than 35 000 individuals have already signed the appeal calling upon governments, political parties and civil society in the region to ensure that “the dignity of women and their equality with men are not, yet again, sacrificed in the name of purported priorities”.
