An Egyptian court has acquitted today 26 men on charges of debauchery. FIDH had launched a campaign that includes a joint petition with Routard.com demanding the release of the 26 men, the dropping of the charges against them, and an immediate end to the repression of LGBT persons in Egypt. The men had been arrested in December from a local hamam (bathhouse) after journalist Mona Iraqi informed the police and aired a sensationalist story about the arrest showing the faces of the half-naked men on her television show. The campaign has also targeted the journalist Iraqi condemning such shameful outrageous methods used to hunt down homosexuals in Egypt.

For more information on the case, see the statement by FIDH member organization in Egypt, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights.
