FIDH, the Greens/EFA and EPP Groups are hosting the public hearing ’Protecting or downgrading? EU anti-crisis policies and challenges to human rights in Europe’ at the European Parliament on 23 June 2015. The speakers will include Dimitris Christopoulos, FIDH vice-president and vice president of the Hellenic League for Human Rights (HLHR) and Noeline Blackwell, FIDH vice-president and General Director of Free Legal Advice Centres (FLAC)
The hearing, which will gather EU representatives, experts and civil society, will look at the impact that policies adopted in response to the economic and financial crisis are having on human rights across the EU. It will provide an opportunity to present to an EU audience FIDH’s recent report ’Downgrading rights: the cost of austerity in Greece’ released in December 2014 following a fact-finding mission to the country. The hearing intends to examine in particular the EU’s role in elaborating, negotiating and implementing policies that had an adverse impact on human rights, and those policies’ compatibility with the EU’s obligations under international and EU law. It will explore the legal aspects and the political implications, and discuss accountability for violations.
