On 12 April 2014, the Turkish court finally ordered the provisional release of Muharrem Erbey, vice-president of FIDH member organisation, the Human Rights Association of Turkey (IHD), for “lack of evidence”, after more than four years in pre-trial detention. He was arrested in December 2009 for alleged membership to the Kurdish Communities Union (KCK) and charged with “being a member of an illegal organisation”.
FIDH has vigorously campaigned for Muharrem Erbey’s release, since the beginning of a sustained judicial harassment clearly aimed at repressing his legitimate human rights activities, and reiterates its call to drop all charges against him. The trial was postponed until July 7, 2014.
