Our friend and colleague, jailed in November 2011 on politically motivated charges, was finally released after 1052 days. Ales Bialiastki, who is the chairman of the human rights centre Viasna and vice-president of FIDH, has received numerous awards for his unflagging dedication to human rights over the past 30 years and was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize.
Upon his arrest, FIDH immediately mounted a dedicated campaign for his release, mobilizing the international community and advocating at the highest level. In 2012, FIDH’s legal team referred the case to the UN which declared his detention arbitrary and called for his immediate and unconditional release.
